#24 Spectre

This write-up on my 24th Bond movie, Spectre, will be short and sweet. I feel like I’ve said all I have to say about the Daniel Craig era even though I still have one Bond movie left before my Bond movie-watching journey ends.

This movie took me back to the earlier Bond days. The plot was similar to some of the films in Sean Connery’s era. Spectre was better than any of Daniel Craig’s Bond films I’ve seen.

Bond & Women in Spectre

For the first time, Moneypenny and Bond had no sexual interaction. Just a straight up working relationship. And another first… Moneypenny had a boyfriend. Bond was surprised and annoyed that she had male company, ha!

Like the earlier Bond movies, the film ends with Bond riding off into the sunset with a beautiful woman (they weren’t actually riding off into the sunset but they were together in a car). The earlier Bond movies always ended happily with James and a beautiful woman.

James Bond’s Evolution

I’ve already concluded that Daniel Craig has taken Bond to a whole new level. He’s no longer the misogynist he used to be…unless they resurrect that part of him in the next movie, No Time to Die, or in the post Craig era. Please…I hope not.

It’ll be interesting to see what the Bond franchise comes up with after the Craig era. I’d like to see Bond have some emotional and psychological depth. They attempted to do that just a bit with Daniel Craig. The most depth I’ve seen in James Bond was the George Lazenby era (On Her Majesty’s Secret Service) when his wife died. It was a brief but impactful moment at the end of the film.

OTHER

Spectre came out in 2015. Up next is my 25th Bond film, No Time to Die. It didn’t come out until six years after Spectre in October of 2021. That’s quite a long stretch.

I watched this movie on December 3, 2023.
